What is it like to study BSc International Management at Warwick university?
Hello Everyone! My name is Vinny Singhal and I am writing this blog article to describe my beautiful first-year at University of Warwick. But first, something about me. I am a Delhiite from India and I am studying International Management. So, let us begin.
The UCAS jungle and the application process
The application is submitted through UCAS and it is both smooth and challenging. Smooth in its efficiency and challenging in its content and questions. There are about 6-7 sections to complete, the trickiest being the personal statement. Nothing to be daunted about, just be real, honest, and creative and grab a mentor to make the process smoother for yourself. I personally hired a private counsellor to whom I paid a handsome amount. After knowing and mentoring with project access, I wish, I knew about this platform before. It would have saved me from spending thousands of bucks.
I applied to 5 universities and got rejected from 1. The rejection was from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Having been selected by the University of Edinburgh, Manchester, Warwick, and Kings College London, I knew Warwick is my go-to go. I had heard amazing stories about the Warwick Business School (WBS) and the social life on campus, because of which, I could not resist myself from accepting the offer and look forward to a great journey ahead.
My first day and the fresher’s week
Entering the university was tantamount to entering a paradise. I had already seen campus more than 100 times on you tube and the seeing all the infrastructure in real was so surreal. After collecting my ID card and key from the University house, I went to my accommodation (Bluebell-3) and saw 7 people already sitting in the kitchen. All International faces and before I even introduced myself, a guy asked me “Are you up for MTV party tonight”. I said yes and we all went to party and by the end of the night, I realised that I was part of a ‘FLAMILY’.
The next morning I saw 100’s of kiosks at the central campus wherein students were promoting the societies. Warwick has over 300 societies and there is something for everyone. I spent my whole afternoon there and met new people and discovered new societies and opportunities. Then again in the evening my flatmates and I went for a party at the university’s nightclub called The Copper Rooms.
All the fun I had, is not possible to describe here, but I would say that the whole week consisted of societies fair, inductions, socials, and unique parties. Even today, I tell my mates and family that I met more than 300 people in those 7 days, and I believe that it was the most exciting week of my life.
Warwick Business School, Teaching, Learning and Terms
Ranked at 24th in the world, WBS is a paradise for Management and Business students. From offering exciting courses to hosting jobs fairs to inviting world leaders, the administration never fails to deliver the best. Teaching is mostly through lectures, seminars, and experiments. Lectures are delivered by professionals who are best in their field. As a part of my degree, I studied 8 courses in the first year. They are: Accounting for Business, Principles of Marketing, Business Statistics, Debates, Skills and Foundation, Business Analytics, Foundation of Financial Management, Management, Organisation and Society and Economics for Business. Some math is required to do the modules, but do not worry, a math booster is given by the department before you arrive at the university. WBS has all the support you need, from career resources to well-being. Just be pro-active and you will discover the best for yourself.
Assessments and Assignments
Every module has different forms of assessments and assignments. They are mostly in form of online tests, written exams, essays, group presentations and interesting video and audio development activities. Generally, the written exams are in summer (Term 3) that constitutes the maximum weightage of each module (60%-100%). The rest are scheduled throughout Term 1 and Term 2 carrying small weightages. All assessments and assignments have to be taken seriously as for International Management students first-year is very important.
Accommodation, Food and Drink
There are 14 halls of residence on campus. Every hall is different and with unique features. I stayed in Bluebells, that has 8 rooms in one flat. Every flat has a common kitchen and dining with separate en-suite bathrooms and each hall is provided with a study space. The accommodations are for all budgets and for all kinds of people. Allocation is based on preferences and a questionnaire.
Coming to food and drinks, Warwick has restaurants, cafes, bars, delis, grills, and mobile units serving various delicious cuisines. The university even has its own nightclub that organizes socials, circling, and various nights. There is a street food market on Wednesdays and an annual ale and beer festival.
Nearby places
One and a half hour from London and fifteen minutes from Birmingham, the university is surrounded by beautiful towns like Leamington Spa, Canley, and Kenilworth for you to go out and enjoy your weekends. Warwick Castle is a must see and Leamington spa is a small replication of the streets in London.
Wellbeing and Support
Warwick university has everything that a student needs and would desire. Every student is allocated a personal tutor and the university have their own wellbeing, health care and support services. There is a facility called nightline, which is available to students during the night for support. So, at Warwick, every student feels at home.
